You need a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to show employers and carriers that you are a competent and professional truck driver. Operating different commercial motor vehicle requires different set of skills and knowledge. No carrier would take any chances and hire a driver who doesn't possess the appropriate CDL license. In addition, you also need to be well-trained in operating different vehicles as well. Depending on the type of vehicles you will be operating, you can either acquire CDL Class A license for operating a combination of vehicles with a combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or more with the GVWR of the towed vehicle being more than 10,000 pounds or a Class B license to operate a combination of vehicles with the combined GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more with the GVWR of the vehicle being towed more than 10,000 pounds.
Once you acquire a suitable license, you can apply for driver jobs requiring either CDL Class A license or CDL Class B license. With CDL Class A license, a driver can do a job that involves operating interstate and intrastate tractor trailers. On the other hand, with CDL Class B license, a driver can do a job that requires hauling specialty cargo, heavy truck and tractor-trailer, etc.
